THE CIRCUMSTANCES

Forty years ago, when the AIDS epidemic swept through Indianapolis, Damien Center became a central hub for a range of vital HIV/AIDS support services. Today, as people live full lives with HIV, Damien Center has expanded its scope, and now works with a wide range of populations.

THE SHIFT

The Near Eastside of Indianapolis where Damien Center is located has the largest number of people who are experiencing homelessness, the highest rates of overdoses and the largest medically underserved population in the city. Damien Center already serves more than 8,100 patients annually across programs ranging from primary care and mental healthcare to needle exchanges and overdose reversals. With an increasing number of residents seeking assistance, its current space could no longer meet demand.

THE RESULT

After a search for an existing building to convert, Damien Center decided to construct a 56,000-square-foot health center adjacent to its current facility. With the new space, they will be able to serve double the number of patients and add new dental, vision and audiology services. “We’re so honored to be able to help raise up and save the lives of the people who come through our doors,” says Alan Wichey, President & CEO. “Now, because BlueHub believed we could do this work, we can help more people than ever before. Without them, it wouldn’t have happened.”

The BlueHub team asked us as many questions about serving community as they did about our ability to be a good financial partner. There was more to the relationship than just a transaction.”
